Multi-functional family garden

A busy family in Newcastle wanted to incorporate into their garden distinct but connected spaces to socialise, cook, relax, work and also work out. I focussed the budget on the part the garden that could most seamlessly facilitate this whilst maximising light, views and existing established planting. This involved installing a substantial open-sided pergola surrounded by staggered paving, contrasting with natural limestone gravel and pops of creeping plants. To make a feature of the mature apple tree, we underplanted with grasses full of texture and movement. I kept proportions of the space in balance by building a large raised planter that connects to a potting / cooking bench.
Behind all of this, we embedded heavy duty outdoors mats for working out and playing basketball.
